Nancy’s passionate journey on how she got involved in Functional Medicine and Biomedical Interventions started when her youngest son developed food allergies, liver issues and was not reaching his childhood milestones. Every day was a struggle. Fast forward, nothing short of a miracle, she applies her research and knowledge along with the functional medicine lab work to create customized regimes for her clients. Nancy’s mission is to assist others with healing, and this interview is about how entrepreneurs need to take charge and take care of themselves before they can really build a successful business.

Jasper:  How difficult was it for you to give up that lifestyle, because obviously that was something you very much enjoyed? It’s a major change, isn’t it?

Nancy:  That’s a great question. I have to say I mourned every December when bonus time would come up. It was a different culture. Here I was in such a corporate culture and never thinking it would stop. I truly enjoyed it and I had my dad watching my kids, so I didn’t have to worry about them. Everything seemed perfect. Sometimes you plan and things look great, but you have to realize you always should have some type of Plan B because things change, life changes, things happen, and you can never imagine those. You have to know flexibility and patience. I feel like I went through the stages of mourning because I did miss the interaction with my co-workers. I loved traveling and missed that as well. Also, I was the bread winner, so I missed that paycheck and that salary and that huge bonus, and now it was a loss.

Meredith:  When did you know that you had made the right decision?

Nancy:  I felt that I made the right decision when I made it, because I thought to myself, “I could stay at this job. I’m a vice president, I became one in eight months, I was a woman, it was unheard of, and things were looking so bright there.” Then I thought, “Well, when I’m 80 years old – if I last that long – and I look back at my life, did I make the right choice back then? Did I help my son or did I leave his future in somebody else’s hands?” I didn’t even like the answers that they were giving us back then, so I couldn’t live with myself looking back at my life and saying, “Did I try my best?” I wouldn’t have been able to say yes if I didn’t take matters into my own hands.

Meredith:  Nancy, I’ve noticed that a lot of times when people become entrepreneurs, they get so focused on their business and making that work that they ignore the engine that’s powering the business, which is themselves. They ignore their health and stop taking care of themselves as well. Can you give some tips for someone making that transition to keep themselves healthy?

Nancy:  Yes. I see this all the time in entrepreneurial groups. The men and women are working ragged, they’re working long hours, they’re just going for fast food, they have no time to invest in themselves. I always say you have to invest in your health because without your health, you’re not going to be able to reach your goals. You’ll just be able to do the minimal amount. So there are certain key factors. It’s really about lifestyle, not just looking at what one eats.

Get adequate amounts of sleep. If you can’t get them consecutively, then you need some type of power naps, especially if you’re working at home. If you can’t sleep at night for so many hours, then take a power nap. You have to think clearly.

Stay hydrated. Many entrepreneurs whom I see are so dehydrated. They’re not drinking enough water. They’re drinking coffee or tea, and that’s going to dehydrate the body. One would think, “Oh, I’m drinking coffee, it’s a liquid, or tea, it’s a liquid.” But, no, we need water. Our body is made up of water and hydration keeps the mind fluid as well.

Have set meals, at least 3 to 5 set meals throughout the day, to keep the blood sugar level even so there is not a spike in energy and then total fatigue afterwards.

Exercise. Even if it’s a 10 minute exercise or walking, getting up from the desk and taking a 15 minute walk, or some type of 10 to 30 minute exercise.

These things are key so that we feel good physically, mentally, and emotionally. To do that, we need the right food, we need to stay hydrated, we need the right amount of sleep, and we need some type of physical movement.

Last, but not least, is stress reduction. Everyone has stress. Life is stressful. If we don’t know how to react and how to reduce our stress, then that’s going to be a problem. So what do-it-yourself techniques can one do to lessen the stress?
