People seek me out often because they are struggling with something very specific – something that has become unbearable – it could be a fear of public speaking, for example, or even something affecting them generally, like claustrophobia.
The other way people come to me is as a business coach. They know they are not where they want to be. They feel that desire within them for something greater. They know its possible or they wouldn’t be willing to do the work,
I was an EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) practitioner. Then in 2010 I started a local practice as a general hypnotherapist, doing all the usual things you associate with hypnotherapy like quitting smoking, weight loss etc. But I found that the people I really resonated with were all business owners. I had been a serial entrepreneur myself since I was eighteen. So my coach recommended that I just concentrate on working with business owners. But I thought that never work because I really had a an underlying insecurity about being able to be successful as a coach or mentor to other entrepreneurs – because I never felt that I had been successful as an entrepreneur myself. It took a long time for me to work through those layers of belief that I had. I had to do it in a series of small steps.
My hypnotherapy practice was pretty successful and I wasn’t willing to let that go. I was too attached to the financial security. I started by segueing the hypnotherapy with coaching for business clients, and I reached out to them online, and that allowed me to start working with people all over the world – so it was a blessing in disguise.
So when people come to me they often don’t know what it is that they are bumping up against. They know they want to reach somewhere different but the mind throws up all sorts of reasons why they can’t and we have to work through those in order to get to the other side. Its that conditioning that we have learned from teachers, parents, society that is really at the foundation of who we believe we can be. We are so close to our own problems that we don’t know what else is possible, and that is where having someone like me helping them can really help to overcome that difficult obstacle.
One of the common ones is the “I’m not good enough” syndrome – and that can manifest in a lot of different ways. Some you can appear really successful on the outside but they are experiencing what is often called “the imposteur syndrome” – where they have a real fear that people will find out that they they are not all that special, or deserving, or worthy of their accomplishments.
When we can identify what the picture is in the client’s mind and the beliefs that are reinforcing that picture, then we can employ hypnosis and a range of other techniques to recondition those beliefs. Its a process of untangling a lot of different layers.
